African Fabric Flower with Stem | DIY

Hello Love,

Recently I’ve gained a love for flowers. Well, I’ve always enjoyed a good bouquet what I actually mean is, Fabric Flowers.

You can do so much with this craft and decorating can be a pretty thing. A very Pretty thing. The fabric I used here is from one of my past clients project where I made her a custom Camera Bag with a gorgeous fabric she had gotten from her missions trip to Africa.

Because I’m a bit of a fabric hoarder. I do not like throwing away any piece of fabric! I know! (You should see my closet and stash O_O)

Unless it’s stringy and even then I hesitate. I kept the remnants of her fabric, as I’ve done with all my projects including my very first ones, with the goal of making something. Something special, just for her as, a thank you, as a friend and because this fabric is truly hers.

I was blessed enough to be invited to her cutie pie daughters birthday and thought, it would be just Awesome, to have as a keepsake. A keepsake to pass down – a story, a tradition of giving back, to her daughter.

I think there’s a great story there.

How to Make this Particular flower, the Basics!

Materials you’ll need

  • Hot glue gun
  • Candle
  • Your choice fabrics (2 styles)
  • Natural Polished Hemp
  • Floweriest wire
  • Burlap (Optional)

I used an AMAZING Template from TheDIYMommy and I used her instructions of the rose. So I can’t get complete credit, But I pretty much winged it on the second bud. I DID NOT sew this, I used my glue gun. ^_^ I tried to sew it, but it was just not working if I wanted to add a stem and I wanted my flower sturdy enough to last.

Cut out 6 of each of the sizes in the template. You’ll get around 24 pedals.

After you’re done cutting 24 pedals, make sure you use a good candle to secure the raw edges, this prevents fraying. Test out your fabric before you begin to secure those edges!

[dropcap]3[/dropcap]Prep your wire

Once you have the edges done, go ahead and start prepping your Florist wire, I found 22 gauge is too thin, if you can get a gauge that’s a bit thicker like a 12 or 10 it would do wonders for you!

PROTip: When dealing with Florist gauge the smaller the number the thicker the wire.

Choose the length you’d like and remember you can always take away length but you can never add it.

I used two long stems for this, due to the second bud, and 2 short stems for the leaves, then just wrapped them together. I secured them with the natural hemp wire…

[dropcap]4[/dropcap]Secure your pedals onto your wire!

Take your first pedal and secure it into place with your glue gun, around the tip of your florist wire. You’ll want to cover most of the tip around an inch or 2, to really secure it in place. Then start securing the rest of your pedals!

You can do as you please with the design. I did all one color and added the second last.

This material is by far one of my favorites! I love the rawness of it. You don’t have to use this, you can use crepe paper or florist tape for this one! Have fun, experiment and make it yours!

For the Leaves I drew the African continent onto a piece a paper cut it out and traced it over the fabric. Sorry I have no template for that one!

Hope you enjoyed! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!!
